5 Tips to Secure Fair Car Rental Prices in Uganda
March 8, 2025Booking a rental car in Uganda often comes with many questions. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding car hire in Uganda and East Africa.
1. Is it cheaper to pre-book a car rental or book upon arrival?
Pre-booking is usually the better option as it allows you to choose from a wider range of vehicles and take advantage of discounts, especially during peak seasons.
2. Why choose a self-drive tour?
Self-drive rentals are popular because they offer flexibility and freedom. Travelers can explore Uganda at their own pace and visit multiple attractions without restrictions. Additionally, Uganda is considered a safe destination for self-drive safaris.
3. What is the minimum age to rent a car for self-drive?
In Uganda, you must be at least 18 years old to rent a car for self-drive.
4. Can I return the car earlier than agreed?
Yes, you can return the car early. However, rental fees for unused days are generally non-refundable. Terms should be discussed with the rental company in advance.
5. Are there hidden costs?
Some rental fees include mandatory costs like road taxes or airport fees. Some companies may also charge extra for third-party services or add-ons. Always confirm any additional costs before booking.
6. Do I qualify to drive in Uganda?
If you are 20 years or older and have a valid driving license, you can rent a car. Drivers under 20 with a permit may need to pay an additional surcharge.
7. What is included in the daily rental fee?
The daily fee typically covers:
- 24/7 roadside assistance
- Insurance for accidental damage and theft
- Free vehicle delivery and pickup
8. What are the cancellation policies?
- No cancellation fee if you notify the company at least 7 days in advance (minus processing fees)
- 50% refund if canceled 5 days before the rental start date
- No refund for cancellations made less than 5 days before the rental
9. Are there mileage limits?
Most Ugandan car rental agencies offer unlimited mileage unless the rental is for a few hours.
10. Is a security deposit required?
Not always. Some companies require a refundable deposit (usually around $400), while others do not.
11. Do I need to refuel or clean the car before returning it?
Cleaning is generally not required. Refueling depends on the agreement with the rental agency—if the car was provided with a full tank, it should be returned the same way.
12. Do I need an international driving permit?
Yes. An international driving permit (IDP) is required as proof of a valid driver’s license from your home country.
13. Is travel insurance necessary?
Travel insurance is highly recommended. Your tour operator can guide you on the best policy for your trip.
By understanding these key details, travelers can have a smooth car rental experience in Uganda. Always communicate with your rental agency to clarify any concerns before confirming a booking.
