Can You Pick up a Rental Car in Uganda if Your Passport and Driving License Names Don’t Match

Learn how car hire in Uganda works when your identification documents show different names, what situations are commonly accepted, and which documents help you avoid problems at the rental desk.

In many cases, you can still pick up a rental car in Uganda even if your passport and driving licence display different names. However, it largely depends on how big the difference is and whether you can clearly prove both names belong to you. Rental companies must verify identity, confirm driving eligibility, and ensure the payment method is valid. If they cannot confidently connect your booking to your identity, they may decline to release the vehicle.

This situation often arises for travellers arriving through Entebbe International Airport, where visitors typically present a foreign driving licence alongside a passport. Any mismatch between names on your booking, ID, and payment card can lead to delays at the counter.

As a general rule, the name on your reservation should match your driving licence, and that should match your passport. If they differ, you will need documents that clearly link the names. Fortunately, most mismatches are common and can be resolved with proper paperwork.

Why matching names matter to rental companies

Car rental providers in Uganda must confirm who is taking the vehicle, ensure the driver is licensed, and verify that the payment method belongs to the renter or an approved payer. At the counter, staff will usually check your passport, driving licence, and payment card. If the names do not match, they may see this as a risk and ask for additional proof—or refuse the booking altogether.

Typical name mismatch situations and how they are handled

Marriage, divorce, or legal name change
This is one of the most common scenarios. You might have a passport in your current name and a driving licence in a previous name, or the other way around. In such cases, you should carry official documents like a marriage certificate or legal name change certificate to connect the two identities.

Differences in middle names
Sometimes one document includes a middle name while another does not. This is usually acceptable if your first and last names match and other details—such as your date of birth and photo—are consistent. Issues may arise if the booking uses the wrong name format.

Initials versus full names
If one document shows initials and another shows your full name, it can still be accepted if your surname and other personal details match. Bringing an additional ID, such as a bank card or national ID, can help support your case.

Minor spelling differences or language variations
Names can appear differently due to spelling variations or translation into English. Small differences are often acceptable if it is clear they refer to the same person and all other identifying details match.

Documents that help avoid refusal

When your names do not match, your goal is to show a clear link between them. Official documents are the most useful, especially those issued by government authorities.

You should carry any legal name-change documents, a second form of identification, your booking confirmation, and your payment card. If you are using an International Driving Permit, always bring it together with your original driving licence, as it is not valid on its own.

What to do before arriving at the rental desk

Before you travel, double-check the name on your reservation. It should match the driving licence of the main driver. If there is an error, correct it in advance rather than waiting until you arrive.

Also, make sure all your documents are consistent and ready to present. Use the same payment card as your booking, ensure your passport is valid, and keep everything easily accessible. If you have multiple IDs, choose the one that matches your reservation details.

How to explain a name mismatch at the counter

When you reach the desk, inform the staff immediately that your documents show different names and that you have proof linking them. Present your passport and driving licence, followed by any supporting documents. Being upfront helps avoid confusion and speeds up the process.

If the difference is minor, point out matching details like your date of birth and photograph. Keep your explanation simple and clear so the staff can verify your identity quickly.

When a mismatch may lead to refusal

Some situations are more likely to be rejected. These include cases where surnames are completely different without supporting documents, where the payment card does not match the driver’s name, or where the driving licence appears inconsistent or invalid.

FAQ

Can I rent a car in Uganda if my passport and driving licence have different surnames?
Yes, in many cases, as long as you provide official documents—such as a marriage certificate—linking the two names.

Is it a problem if my middle name is missing on one document?
Usually not, provided your first and last names and other personal details match. However, it may cause slight delays.

Does an International Driving Permit solve name differences?
